On back of today's white paper
copy these definitions
1. microvilli - small
fingerlike extensions on the top surface of the cell membrane to increase the
absorptive surface area (in intestines.)
2. tight junctions - (like
rivets in sheet metal) makes a watertight connection near the surface to
prevent bacteria and protista from sneaking between the cells and entering our
blood.
3. button desmosomes - like
two protein plates inside adjacent cells that work like buttons on both sides
to hold the cell membranes together. (like cufflinks)
4. hemidesmosome -
"half button" only one protein plate inside the cell holding the
bottom cell membrane to the underlying basement membrane.
5. gap junction - like
protein straws that connect between two cell membranes to allow passage of
cytosol and nutrients and electrical stimulus.
